From the moment the first doll appeared, it has always had some function and some meaning: a talisman, an imitation of a human, a toy, a decorative object, and finally - a piece of art. Each doll has its individuality and style which depend on the country, the region, the materials and the artist who makes it.

Current exhibition at the Istituto Giapponese di Cultura (The Institute of Japanese Culture), focuses on traditional Japanese dolls by the true craftsman Hatsuko Ono, which are well-known thanks to their accuracy and the expressions on their faces. Inspired by poetry and the refinement so characteristic of the Japanese culture, the artist depicts the scenes from the kabuki theatre, images of the Tokigawa period, funny and curious children and female figures. The exhibition is opened until 28 June 2008.
