New terminal for Leonardo da Vinci airport

Next month the Leonardo da Vinci airport in Rome will open a new terminal for some flights leaving for the United States and Israel. The Terminal 5 will open May 3rd and will host travelers flying to the above-mentioned destinations with Continental Airlines, American Airlines, United and US Airways (USA) and El Al (Israel). Note that Alitalia's flights to these destinations will continue to leave from the Leonardo da Vinci airport's main terminal for intercontinental flights.

The Terminal was presented to the media on Thursday. According to the airport director Vitaliano Turra, construction of the terminal is connected with the necessity of extra security checks because "security is a sensitive issue for travelers flying to these particular destinations." The terminal will have a "profiling area" where security staff will interview travelers before check-ins. Airport officials expect that initially the terminal will host almost one million passengers a year. Its total capacity is three million.
