Purple RomeRome National Museum is running an exhibition devoted to the decorative painting of the ancient Roman cities located on the territory near the Vesuvius. The painting is known to general public as "Pompeii painting". The prevailing colour used by the ancient artists was purple as at that time it was associated with luxury and wealth. "Pompeii purple"("rosso pompeiana") was used for decoration of the patrician villas by the Roman painters. Some 108 wall paintings from Pompeii, Stabiae and Herculaneum are on display.
