UN Food Crisis Summit

List of Rome hotels Great Hotels of the WorldNext week, June 3-5 Rome hosts the UN Food Crisis Summit which is aimed to raise awareness of the problem of hunger in poor countries, provide aid to the countries that face malnutrition and define some stragedies for improving food production.

The summit is hosted by the UN's Food and Agriculture Organisation. Some of the problems set to be discussed are the establishment of a global food fund and new international guidelines on the cultivation of biofuels.

During the last months thirty-seven countries have been hit hard by the growth in prices for products like soya beans, wheat, sugar and dairy products, which resulted in food riots (Cameroon, Niger, Egypt and Haiti). The summit in Rome is the first of a series of meetings organised to resolve the problem.

Anna Karenina

Rome hotels Great Hotels of the World"Anna Karenina" (anglicized "Anna Karenin") is one of the best works by the Russian writer Leo Tolstoy. It is considered to be a realist fiction, but the author himself declared the story to be his first true novel. The character of the heroine was inspired by the daughter of the famous poet Alexander Pushkin, whom he once met at dinner. The lady impressed Tolstoy so much that he began writing a story, which had been published in "Russkii Vestnik" from 1873 to 1877.

The novel has often been staged with great success. The Lithuanian director Eimuntas Nekrosius suggests his own version of the book. Working with a cast of Italian actors, he introduces a soothing leitmotif, extensive involvement of dance and movement, interesting decorations and the use of natural decorations, such as fire, wind, water, ice and stone.

The performance is run in Teatro Argentina from 4 to 16 March.
