Ottocento

OttocentoFor the first time the Scuderie del Quirinale hosts an exhibition dedicated entirely to the Italian 19th century painting. Despite its great historic past and national independence that the country acquired in the 19th century, this was also the period when it faced decline and loss of the leading role on the international arena. The only names that got international recognition at the time were the sculptor Canova and painters Boldini and Segantini.

The exhibition is a kind of a challenge aimed to show how the Italian artists worked in such a tough historical environment and tried to keep up with the Italian tradition. There are some 100 masterpieces selected by the experts. Discover works by the members of the Romantic School in Milan, Macchiaioli in Florence, Posillipo school in Naples and others. The exhibition is opened until 10 June 2008.

Mark Rothko: The Works

The expo center houses the exhibition of Mark Rothko's works since 6 October 2007 to 6 January 2008. This is the first exposition of the American painter in Rome during the last forty years. Some 70 paintings are on display.

The goal of the exhibit is to cover the whole Rothko's creative work, paying attention to the author's constant striving for presenting his work through thoroughly selected groups or artwork, designed to intensify the visual impact of the single works.

The exhibition demonstrates different periods of the author's creative work: from the figurative canvases to the surreal works, from the "Multiforms" to the classic works of the 50's leading up to the "Black form" and "Black on Grey" paintings. This is the first try to reconstruct some of the paintings displayed in the "Mark Rothko Room" at the Venice Biennale in 1958, which met with great success.

One of the artist's works holds the world record for the highest paid modern artwork, being sold by Sotheby's for 72.8 million dollars.

Ex-volto. Sculptures by Paolo Delle Monache

Ex-volto. Sculptures by Paolo Delle MonacheMany know the Museo Barracco, founded by the collector Giovanni Barracco, as a museum containing prestigious collections of antique sculpture. However, until 8 June 2008 the museum plays hosts to contemporary art, with works by Paolo Delle Monache displayed at the venue within the "Ex-volto" exhibition. 25 sculptures represent the images of a human and its surroundings and seem to feel quite at home among the ancient masterpieces from Syria, Egypt, Cypress, Phoenicia, Greece and Rome.

The focus of the exhibition is a human face: detached, thoughtful, intensive, serious. In his works Paolo Delle Monache uses architectural elements that create non-existent figures, or forms that can be interpreted in many ways. The material he uses for his works is bronze, because "it is self-supporting and can cope with any balancing or warping problems."

Study Of Light

Antichita Parenza is hosting an exhibition of Karen Thomas' works devoted to the study of light. The German artist has been interested in the subject for 6 years and now her collection counts items demonstrating the beauty of light in all its forms: from solar light to light at night, from cosmic to interior light. The paintings are made in a mixed technique that brings together oil, pigments, silver leaves, gold and bronze. Through her works Thomas tries to carry a very important idea: the people should take care of the planet to preserve its beauty for the generations to follow.
The current exhibition succeeds the one that took place at the National Museum of Castel S. Angelo and was a real success. The exposition is open until 29 February. Don't miss the event!

Contemporary Art Wonder

Atelier Van Lieshout is a famous workshop situated in Rotterdam. Artworks and many other products begin their lives in the concrete building (which by itself is an industrial monument) before they are sent to different parts of the world. There are twenty people working in the warehouse. All of them have different education and background as well as personal preferences. That results in the most original, eclectic and even weird works. One of the best-known creations of the AVL is the Wellness Scull - a great white scull that serves as a recreation centre.
From 26 May 2007 to 31 December 2008 the visitors of the Marco Hall have a chance to admire a contemporary masterpiece by the Atelier Van Lieshout. This is a big machine for recycling organic material. Come and see this combination of practicalness and design!
